FODMAPish Snacks

As you all know, we are FODMAPers here at the VP house, so our diet can get a little weird sometimes. Mr. MVP was getting frustrated by his lack of variety of snacks during the week, so we went to the Food Co-Op to see what we could find. I should first tell you that we are past the initial phase of the FODMAP diet that feels more restrictive and on to a new more inclusive portion of the plan. We have already weeded out dairy, soy and gluten as triggers and we know that certain fruits can be tolerated just fine. We are skipping the challenge that suggests we try artificial sweeteners because we simply don’t eat them. We’ve constructed some mini challenges of our own with some foods like apples, brussels spouts, and asparagus that we are leery of. Anyhow.

Snacks are an important part of the FODMAP eating plan because eating 5 or 6 times each day would be impossible without them. We found fresh fruit, nuts and seeds were the best snacks, but eating the same things for weeks on end can get boring. We wanted packaged snacks with absolutely no preservatives, additives or colorings. Here is what we found.

Go Raw

Go Raw Super Cookies are really, really good. They do contain dates, but we don’t have problems with dates. The rest of the ingredients are carrots, coconut, sesame seeds and nutmeg. They are all organic and vegan. One serving is 20 bite sized cookies and they should be stored in the refrigerator. They are crunchy and sweet. They are not oily. They taste like coconut, carrots and nutmeg. I like Go Raw because they have lots of flavors, they are filling and they taste sweet.

SeaSnax

SeaSnax was Mr. MVP’s favorite. They are sheets of roasted seaweed which are also gluten free, sugar free, and vegan. The ingredients are seaweed, olive oil and sea salt. I did not like SeaSnax at all. The seaweed was fishy. Really, super fishy. I’m not proud of this, but I spit out my SeaSnax. Mr. MVP said they remind him of a yummy salad he has at his favorite sushi place. I should say here, I am not a big fish fan, the smell makes my stomach turn and the taste of really fishy fish just makes me uncomfortable. SeaSnax are completely FODMAP free.

Goat cheese is something I wished we would have discovered a lot sooner. I was hesitant to try it because I  assumed it would be wildly sharp and weird and well, cheesy, but it wasn’t. I love goat cheese. It’s creamy and mild and just the right amount of tangy. We are grilling gluten free pizza tonight and we’re putting goat cheese all over the top. I seriously cannot wait. Our goat cheese is FODMAP free and there are other cheeses that are too, like feta and mozzarella. Goat cheese is usually found at your supermarket near the produce section with the fancy cheeses. Look for a mild 100% goat milk cheese to start. The cheese is extremely soft, but don’t be afraid. It’s great on burgers, grilled cheese or just as a snack. As with all things FODMAP we tend to stick to portion sizes and cheese has a portion size of 1 to 1.5 ounces.

Like I said before, snacks are important. So, go and pack your snacks and get moving. Happy FODMAPing!
