Movie Madness

This past weekend we were activity free because Mr. MVP is recovering from a cold and he had some technical reading to do. Usually when Mr. MVP is working on the weekends I fall into a seamless routine straight from the week and nothing really changes, but this weekend I was feeling a little off, so I decided to binge on movies and knitting instead. Mr. MVP was able to take a few breaks and join me for a few of the movies, but these ratings are mine, only.

Knitting

Knitting

If you’ve been reading this blog for a bit you know that we haven’t had cable in our house for at least a few years, so we use Netflix, Amazon, Hulu Plus and various websites to watch movies and television. This works really well when coupled with our Roku and Apple TV. I’ve noticed lately, however, that Netflix has been rating good movies poorly, but apparently that is a common problem. Team VP shares a queue and we have vastly different movies tastes, so Netflix is most likely just confused. It appears this confusion will be short lived because our Apple TV will now give us access to separate Netflix profiles and better movie watching. Apple, Netflix and Team VP FTW!

Sorry. I adore Mr. MVP, but he loves to watch movies like The Artist, a silent black and white movie about a dancer. *Yawn* Apparently I have the attention span of a puppy. Anyhow, in no particular order, here are the movies that I watched:

Numbers Station

The Numbers Station

The Numbers Station stars John Cusack and Malin Akerman and IMDb says, “A disgraced black ops agent is dispatched to a remote CIA broadcast station to protect a code operator. Soon, they find themselves in a life-or-death struggle to stop a deadly plot before it’s too late.”  I liked this movie even though the ratings on every website were just blah. It was a little cheesy, but there was enough action and adventure to keep me interested and as a bonus I could easily knit and follow a pattern and keep up with the plot. *Available on Netflix for free, Amazon 48 hour rental for $3.99 or iTunes for $3.99. <Extra credit: How to listen to real spy broadcasts.>

Witness

Witness

Witness stars Harrison Ford, Josef Sommer and Kelly McGillis and IMDb says, “A young Amish boy is sole witness to a murder; policeman John Book goes into hiding in Amish country to protect him until the trial.” I don’t always enjoy movies with Harrison Ford, but this movie I liked. There was just enough plot to keep the fact that were a number of dramatic, dragging, emotional scenes out of my mind. I like police movies, so this film worked for me and I could knit and not worry about missing anything important. Available on Netflix for free, Amazon 48 hour rental for $2.99 or for purchase in iTunes for $9.99. <Extra credit: The Amish Ask For A Boycott of ‘Witness’.

Lovestruck: The Musical

Lovestruck: The Musical

Lovestruck: The Musical stars Sara Paxton, Drew Seeley, and Jane Seymour. The Hollywood Reporter says, “The television movie follows Broadway star-turned-choreographer Harper, whose daughter — and star of her next production — Mirabella makes the decision to quit the show in order to get married to playboy Marco. When Harper catches wind of her daughter’s new priorities, she is determined to show Mirabella that love does not always trump career. That’s where the twist comes in: While on her way to stop her daughter’s wedding in Italy, Harper unknowingly drinks an elixir, turning her three decades younger.” First of all, don’t judge me, because secondly, I’m a sucker for two things ABC family movies and, for some strange reason, musicals. I also absolutely love Christmas movies, but that is for another post. This incredibly shiny, over processed movie has really peppy music, snappy dance numbers and magic. You’ll never admit it to your friends, but I know you’ll watch it and sing along. Available on Netflix for free and for purchase on iTunes for $5.99. <Extra credit: Lovestruck on location in Italy near Pittsburgh.>

Primer

Primer

Primer stars Shane Carruth, David Sullivan and Casey Gooden. IMDb says, “Four friends/fledgling entrepreneurs, knowing that there’s something bigger and more innovative than the different error-checking devices they’ve built, wrestle over their new invention.” I love movies about time travel, but Primer and I didn’t click. The main characters mumbled, spoke on top of each other and used so much technical jargon that even with the closed captioning I had trouble figuring out what was going on. Mr. MVP attempted to explain what was happening multiple times and just went I thought I had picked it up, the plot took a jog and I was lost again. This is a cerebral movie and not good for complicated knitting. Available on Netflix for free, Amazon 3 day rental for $2.99 or for purchase on iTunes for $9.99. <Extra credit: A primer on Primer.>

The Hit List

The Hit List

The Hit List stars Cuba Gooding, Jr and Cole Hauser and IMDb says, “A disgruntled man creates a hit list with a stranger during a drunken night out and must then race to try to save those he marked for extermination as the bodies begin to pile up and all fingers point to him.” This movie sounded great on Netflix, the trailer looked fantastic, but we made it about thirty minutes in and gave up. It was awful. I did get thirty full minutes of knitting in. Available on Netflix for free. Please do not pay for this movie. <Extra Credit: Jerry Maguire.>

Fat Kid Rules The World

Fat Kid Rules The World

Fat Kid Rules The World stars Jacob Wysocki, Matt O’Leary and Billy Campbell. IMDb says, “A dropout comes to the aid of a chubby and suicidal high-school kid by recruiting him as the drummer for his upstart punk-rock band.” This film is labeled as a comedy, but I would classify it more as a drama. This movie was not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it dragged in parts. The plot was simple and I was able to easily knit during the entire movie, but there were times it felt like the film should have been over and yet it just kept going. Available on Netflix for free, Amazon 48 hour rental for $3.99 or iTunes for $3.99. <Extra Credit: Google Bath Boys NSFW.>

48 Hrs.

48 Hrs.

48 Hrs. stars Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy and IMDb says, “A hard-nosed cop reluctantly teams up with a wise-cracking criminal temporarily paroled to him, in order to track down a killer.” I was supposed to really like this movie because it’s a police comedy, but I had problems. I gave it one full hour and then I quit. It may be a movie I revisit another time when I’m feeling better, but this movie just did not work for me. Available on Amazon for free, Amazon 48 hour rental for $2.99, or iTunes for $2.99. <Extra Credit: Eddie Murphy was a newbie.>

Breakout Kings

Breakout Kings

Breakout Kings stars a host of lovable misfits who IMDb accurately sums up as, “A squad of U.S. marshals team up with cons (former fugitives) to work together on tracking down prison escapees in exchange for getting time off their sentences.” I really enjoy this television series. I only watched the first two episodes, but they were fast paced, funny and action packed. The premise for the show is completely absurd, but if I shove that aside and root for a simple good vs evil structure, this show wins. As a bonus I can easily knit and watch. Available on Netflix for free or Amazon for $25.99 for the entire first season. <Extra Credit: Spoiler Alert.>
